Tell Your Senator: They Voted Wrong on Yemen

On Tuesday, March 20th — the 15th anniversary of the Iraq War — your senator voted against a resolution to end America’s shameful and unconstitutional involvement in the war in Yemen, S.J.Res. 54. With that vote, they accepted the Trump administration’s bogus justification for helping to put 8 million people on the brink of starvation.

Let know how angry you are that on the 15th anniversary of the Iraq War, they voted to keep supporting the unauthorized war in Yemen.

Dear Senator,

I am your constituent, writing because I am extremely disappointed in your vote on Tuesday to table S.J.Res. 54. This critical resolution would have ended the United States’ role in triggering the worst humanitarian crisis on the planet by cutting off military aid to Saudi Arabia that directly assists in the targeting and deliberate starvation of Yemeni civilians.

I am especially ashamed that you voted against ending this unconstitutional war on the 15th anniversary of the Iraq War. History teaches us that the Bush administration’s fabrications for entering the war caused incalculable death and suffering, including taking the lives of tens of thousands of American troops, and created widespread instability in the region.

I believe that U.S. involvement in the war in Yemen is equally clear-cut. The Trump administration’s justifications for continuing to aid the brutal Saudi-UAE campaign in Yemen do not hold up to scrutiny. American military aid is enabling the bombing of civilian targets, the worst cholera outbreak on record, and the deliberate starvation of millions, as well as actively strengthening al-Qaeda and the self-described Islamic State.

You had an historic opportunity to take back Congress’s authority and help end the unauthorized war in Yemen. By failing to support S.J.Res.54, I believe you are repeating mistakes of past Congresses who failed to scrutinize the harm that U.S. global war-making has done to both civilians around the world and to U.S. national security.
