Repeal the 2002 AUMF!

Right now, Congress is negotiating the final Department of Defense Appropriations bill, and between the Senate- and House-passed versions of the legislation there is a CRUCIAL opportunity: a chance to repeal the 2002 Authorization for Military Force (AUMF).

Presidents from both parties have warped this authorization, stretching its scope to cover unrelated military activities in Iraq, Syria, and Iran that were not contemplated — let alone authorized — by Congress when they originally passed it 18 years ago.

That includes Trump, who just this year, exploited the 2002 AUMF as the legal basis to assassinate Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and drove us to the brink of war with Iran.

Repealing the outdated and unnecessary 2002 Iraq Authorization for Use of Military Force would reassert Congress’ constitutional duty to determine when the United States goes to war. I urge you to retain the House provision to repeal this authorization (Section 9028 of H.R.7617) in the final fiscal year 2021 Department of Defense Appropriations bill.
