With the stroke of a pen, five people curtailed the rights of millions when they overturned Roe v. Wade two summers ago.
Since the Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs, 14 states have enacted abortion bans. Seven others have severely limited access to this medical procedure. That’s not all: We’re also seeing attempts to restrict in vitro fertilization (IVF); efforts to plow hundreds of millions of dollars of state funding to anti-abortion centers, and an uptick in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation that makes it harder for people to access critically needed healthcare and live their lives.
If you care about self-determination, justice, and freedom, it’s been a difficult moment. But the good news? People are pushing back. In 2022, millions of voters refused to allow their rights to be rolled back without a fight. Today, a solid majority of people in the United States agree that abortion should be legal in all or most cases. Local governments in North Carolina, Texas, Maryland, Louisiana, and Virginia are passing proclamations and resolutions to increase access to health care. And this November, as many as TEN states could codify the right to abortion in their state constitutions.
We can carry this amazing momentum to Congress, where Rep. Nikema WIlliams (D-GA-05) will introduce a resolution that would affirm abortion as a human right in just a few weeks. Passing a bill like this will be an uphill challenge — and that’s why we need it to come out of the gate with resounding support from dozens and dozens of original cosponsors. Can you help us build that power?
