Starting on November 23, 2023, a seven-day ceasefire in Israel and Gaza worked. It saved lives, got 110 hostages taken by Hamas back to their families, and freed more than 300 Palestinian women and children from Israeli government detention. Hundreds of aid trucks carrying vital necessities — food, water, medical supplies, fuel, and more — made it into Gaza and violence across the entire region slowed dramatically.
Unfortunately, rather than building on that momentum to end the war in Gaza, leaders allowed the moment to pass and the violence has only metastasized. In recent weeks the pace of the bombings has not let up, and millions of people are bracing for another wartime winter.
The fact remains that the U.S. government WILL play a key role in whatever happens next. As officials at all levels of the Biden administration begin to think hard about the legacy they’re leaving behind, we have an urgent opportunity — an urgent responsibility — to keep the pressure for peace ON.
People in Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, and beyond can’t wait. Today, as we reflect on what 359 days without a ceasefire has bought us, can you take two seconds to join one clear, urgent demand? Call on President Biden: The U.S. government must do all it can to END the violence NOW.
