Congress: Tear up the Patriot Act!

October 26, 2021, marked the 20th anniversary of the Patriot Act, an extensive expansion of the government's authority to spy on its own citizens.

Congress should celebrate the occasion by immediately working to fully repeal it.

Last year, progressive activists won a huge victory by gutting a key provision of the Patriot Act called Section 215. But the fight will not be over until the entire law is repealed. Because today, the Patriot Act still allows for untold civil rights violations and unfettered surveillance on millions of people — no warrants or proof of probable cause required.

Muslim communities, immigrant communities, and racial justice protesters bear the brunt of this powerful, intrusive assault on civil liberties and human rights. But that can change.

The time has come for Congress to put a stop to the damage the Patriot Act has wreaked on our communities — once and for all. And we’re joining together with groups like Center on Race & the Economy (ACRE), Daily Kos, MPower Change, Fight for the Future, and Demand Progress to send them an overwhelming message that will push them to do it.

To members of the 117th U.S. Congress:

Twenty years ago, in the aftermath of 9/11, Congress passed the Patriot Act — an extensive increase of the government's authority to spy on its own citizens with little public discussion, debate, and few hearings.

The result has been an unfettered surveillance state with few safeguards, minimal oversight, and ultimately little ability to truly avoid a terrorist threat. I urge you to end the U.S. surveillance state permanently by repealing the Patriot Act and fighting warrantless surveillance everywhere it occurs.
