The state of play is terrifying: Already, hundreds of people in Lebanon are dead following days of explosions, missiles, rockets, and airstrikes from the Israeli military. Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes with nothing more than a suitcase and little sense of when — or if — they’ll return.

An Israel-Hezbollah in Lebanon would be as catastrophic as it is unnecessary. The escalation we’re watching unfold threatens to ignite a full-scale regional war far more devastating than the horrific violence we’ve already seen. Right now, millions of lives in Israel, Lebanon, and beyond, including U.S. troops deployed across the Middle East, are at incredible risk.

The Biden administration — as the Israeli government’s close ally and chief supplier of its weapons — has influence and pressure left to bear that can stall the escalation and secure a ceasefire in Gaza capable of stopping this deadly and dangerous spiral of violence.
