Tell the Senate: No More Military Support to Starve Yemen

The worst recorded cholera epidemic in human history is raging across Yemen. 17 million Yemenis are facing malnutrition. Because of Saudi Arabia’s port blockades, organizations like Oxfam can’t get food or medicine into the country. And the United States is still handing over weapons, cash, and planes to fuel Saudi brutality against Yemeni civilians.

Demand the Senate take action to cut off military support for Saudi Arabia’s inhumane proxy war in Yemen.

Dear Senator,

As your constituent, I write to urge you to take action to immediately cut off United States military support for Saudi Arabia’s inhumane war targeting Yemeni civilians.
 
Since 2015, a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE — with U.S. military backing — has intervened in Yemen’s civil war, including imposing a blockade on Yemen which has created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis and the worst cholera outbreak ever recorded. Tens of thousands of innocent people have already died from the fighting, from starvation, and from preventable diseases. The crisis has the potential to create a “famine of biblical proportions,” in the words of Jan Egeland, the head of the Norwegian Refugee Council. Because Yemen imports 90 percent of its food, the blockade has put seven million people on the brink of starvation.

Two weeks ago, the Trump administration issued a statement calling for an end to civilian suffering in Yemen. But in the past two weeks, Saudi-led airstrikes have only intensified, targeting twice as many civilian sites as military. Ostensible calls for peace can have no effect while the United States continues to provide the military support that enables these deadly airstrikes and the continuation of this blockade.
 
The humanitarian crisis is also creating a security vacuum in Yemen that the State Department has concluded only helps to empower al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.  In addition, this crisis has created an opportunity for Iran to expand its influence in Yemen – the opposite of the Saudi-backed coalition’s intentions.

I am deeply concerned by America’s complicity in this situation. The United States, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are three of the world’s wealthiest countries; Yemen is one of the world’s poorest. There is no possible justification for the United States to help starve an entire population, bomb weddings, and blockade medical supplies. Again, I urge you to take action to cut off military support for the Saudi-led coalition’s military action in Yemen.
