Senators Adam Schiff and Tim Kaine forced a vote on a War Powers Resolution (WPR) to block Trump from inciting a war in Latin America amidst multiple illegal strikes that have left more than a dozen dead.
48 senators ultimately voted to pull Trump off the path toward war with Venezuela, including multiple Republicans who broke from their party to rebuke the administration’s violent, destabilizing approach to our neighbors.
These senators demonstrated crucially needed leadership to reassert congressional authority over matters of war and peace. But that’s not the only reason this vote was meaningful — it proved that we are this close to building a majority capable of pulling Trump back from the brink of a dangerous new war.
This fight is far from over. Congress will have more opportunities to exert its constitutional war powers, especially with a new WPR already in the works. If we want to ensure these senators keep working to avoid war with Venezuela AND expand the group of lawmakers willing to stop Trump’s warmongering, gratitude can go a long way. That’s why today, we’re thanking these 48 senators, and we need you to join us.
