Win Without War

Let’s remind Congress you can’t fix a public health crisis with bombs and guns

On the campaign trail, Trump stated military strikes against drug cartels in Mexico would "absolutely" be on the table. As president, he just took a dangerous step toward making that terrifyingly bad idea a reality.

On Thursday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio designated eight cartels as ‘Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). It’s a move capable of sparking a diplomatic crisis with our southern neighbor and largest trading partner, spurring incredible violence and instability within Mexico, and directly entangling U.S. servicemembers in cartel crossfire.

If we don’t act fast, the Trump administration could tip the scales toward the kind violence that ultimately empowers cartels and other violent actors and will absolutely fail to reduce the flow of drugs and keep people safe, on either side of the border.

That’s where you come in. We need to ensure every member of Congress is aware of the deep unpopularity and dangers behind misguided proposals like war in Mexico — and they will, if they hear from constituents like you now.

To members of the 119th Congress:

Designations like Trump’s FTO only sets the stage to escalate the U.S.-led war on drugs — and brings us closer to launching a disastrous military action in Mexico.

To build true security, I urge you to enact policies that will actually address substance abuse and support people struggling with addiction, respect the sovereignty of our neighbors, and do not exacerbate violence or harm.
