An 11-week Israeli military blockade led to the closure of every UN World Food Programme (WFP)-supported bakery in Gaza, after flour and fuel ran out and food and medicine rations were exhausted. WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain has warned the amount of aid the Israeli government is finally allowing to enter Gaza is merely a “drop in the bucket” of what’s needed.
The crisis is only exacerbated by a new and controversial U.S. government-backed aid program that’s been compared to Blackwater. The Trump administration called it a “bold” and “out-of-the-box” effort, but reports from the ground unveiled the horrific reality: Scarcely stocked aid distribution sites, chaos, torn-down fences, gunfire, and four people killed.
It’s clear the U.S. government will continue to play a key role in whatever happens next. Our work won’t stop until the remaining hostages taken by Hamas are reunited with their families, until the Israeli government’s war in Gaza ends, and until we’ve found our way back to a pathway to a sustainable peace in Israel, Palestine, and beyond.
That’s why we refuse to stay on the sidelines — and luckily, neither do a group of lawmakers, led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who just introduced a resolution calling for the immediate delivery of aid to address the crisis in Gaza.
If we want to save lives, we need to see more aid rapidly and widely distributed immediately. This resolution can help push the U.S. government to be a tool to ease the suffering. Can you join in to add your support?
