This year alone, the Israeli military has killed more than 4,200 people in Lebanon, over 1 million people have been displaced across the country, and 60,000 Lebanese homes have been damaged or destroyed.

While the U.S. government mediates a fragile ceasefire agreement between the Israeli and Lebanese governments, it should be doing all it can to secure peace. A first step is holding the Israeli government accountable for its human rights abuses in Lebanon, and a powerful provision in the Foreign Assistance Act gives Congress the power to do it.

S.Res.797, a resolution introduced by Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT), would require the State Department to report on the Israeli government’s human rights abuses in Lebanon — and, critically, whether U.S.-supplied weapons have been used in attacks that violated international humanitarian law.

The timing is key. Lebanese President Aoun is headed to the White House to discuss the Israeli military’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon. With Lebanon in focus, we have a powerful opportunity to amplify a demand for peace.
