With Trump’s history of cozy relationships with authoritarian leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, it’s time to ask: Who is pulling the strings?

Inauguration funds can open doors to influence and policy manipulation. Lavish, secretive donations could mean that foreign or special interests are buying favors.

Tech billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sam Altman have announced their million-dollar donations, but past inaugurations have cost as much as $100 million, and there’s still too much we don’t know. Trump’s refusal to disclose the full details of his donors threatens the integrity of our democracy. We cannot let this secrecy become the norm.

If we allow Trump’s practices to go unchecked, we pave the way for future leaders to hide their shady dealings. But the good news is that we have an opportunity to demand accountability.
