Congress: Stop Biden from arming Egypt

The U.S. government currently provides Egypt up to $1.3 BILLION in annual “foreign military financing,” effectively giving the Egyptian government U.S.-taxpayer-funded grants to buy U.S.-made weapons and military equipment.

That unconditional aid means the State Department will keep signing off on arms sales to Egypt every year — just like the sale of 198 Raytheon-made Rolling Airframe Missiles we saw in February — despite the government’s lengthy résumé of past and current human rights abuses.

We need to break this cycle NOW. And a growing coalition in Congress agrees. But they’ll need our help, because we need to go big — and push Congress to make the pernicious weapons-profits feedback loop an impossibility.

To Members of the U.S. Congress:

The United States continues to provide $1.3 billion in largely unaccountable foreign military financing to the Egyptian government, despite a litany of ongoing abuses and state violence against activists and human rights defenders.

The United States should not be in the business of rewarding human rights abusers with funding and weapons. Congress must immediately cut foreign military financing and end arms sales to Egypt, along with all other countries with a record of human rights abuses.
