One of the most disastrous policies of the Bush administration was opening the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. Since then, the prison has become synonymous with unconstitutional abuse and torture, injustice, and institutionalized Islamophobia.
About 800 detainees have been held at the U.S. military prison over the past 19 years. That includes dozens of men — many of whom were tortured, many of whom were never convicted of a crime or even charged with one — who continue to wait. Nine of them have already been cleared for transfer to another country, yet have been stuck waiting in prison for no reason.
President Biden, like Obama before him, supports closing the detention center. But what’s not clear yet is if he has the political will to succeed where Obama fell short. We know President Biden is thinking seriously about closing the detention center. His administration is even considering appointing an envoy to do so.
That’s where we come in. We need to make sure that President Biden knows we’ll have his back if he does the right thing and that we’re going to hold him accountable if he falls short — because we refuse to wait another second before swift action is taken to end this shameful episode. Tell President Biden: Close Guantanamo!
