Across the United States, we are witnessing the resurgence of a dangerous hardline, pro-war narrative on foreign policy. Nikki Haley, Mike Pence, and others are pushing a hawkish and confrontational stance towards China by stoking the fires of fear and nationalism. 

In an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, Haley has detailed her plan for China. The plan includes unwarranted assertions, such as claims that the Biden administration has permitted the "expansion of China's footprint on our homeland." It’s an insinuation as absurd as it is inflammatory.

This kind of nationalist fear mongering serves only to stoke tensions and make the situation worse. 

There is a better way. The Biden administration has been making efforts to de-escalate tensions with China. Secretary Blinken, Secretary Yellen, and Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Kerry have all visited Beijing, exemplifying the diplomatic approach we support. We must encourage and rally behind these efforts, rather than fanning the flames of conflict.
