We are already witnessing how Hamas’ attacks on people in Israel and the Israeli government’s response in Gaza are exacerbating a global rise in Islamophobia and anti-semitism.

Hate crimes are not just statistics and stories, they are the lived experiences of our family, friends, and neighbors. The U.S. government must do more to acknowledge and address these threats wherever and whenever they occur. 

Earlier this year, the White House released a national strategy that “outlines a whole-of-society approach to tackle the scourge of antisemitism in America.” Just last week they also announced they are developing the same to counter Islamophobia.

In 2004, Congress created a Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism when it passed the Global Anti-Semitism Review Act. Today, and as part of the emerging strategy, President Biden should immediately create a Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Islamophobia.
