Reports from the The Washington Post that “classified documents relating to nuclear weapons were among the items FBI agents sought in a search of former president Donald Trump’s Florida residence” are unnerving.

Presidents have sole authority to launch nuclear weapons — even ones that are so careless with nuclear weapons that they took classified documents about nukes to their country club after leaving office. This is too dangerous an authority to be held by one person.

The raid on Mar-a-Lago is a chilling reminder to all of us that it is INCREDIBLY easy for a president to launch the massive U.S. nuclear arsenal. 

No one person should be allowed to decide to end life on the planet as we know it, but that’s exactly what current U.S. law allows for. Right now, with the threat of nuclear war looming, we have a moment to push for something different. That’s why we’re calling on Congress to put immediate limits on the president's authority to start nuclear war on demand.
