The Logan Act: Why Trump’s calls to Putin, Netanyahu, and more may be illegal

Shocking reports confirm that Donald Trump has been operating a “shadow presidency” out of Mar-a-Lago, detailing interactions between the former president and the leaders of Russia, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, Israel, Poland, Hungary, Argentina, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and more.

The former president's actions are not only potentially illegal, but there are growing concerns he may also be jeopardizing prospects for peace in Ukraine, Gaza, and beyond.

Congress passed the Logan Act over 200 years ago to prevent unauthorized diplomacy from undermining a sitting president. It prohibits U.S. citizens from negotiating with foreign governments in dispute with the United States without prior approval. It’s rarely been used, but it’s time the Justice Department dust it off and investigate now.

While it’s not uncommon for past presidents to entertain or even advise foreign leaders after leaving the White House, Trump’s contacts with individuals including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu have been raising eyebrows for months now.

These allegations are just the latest in a long list of potential crimes, conflicts of interest, misdeeds, and negligence in U.S. foreign policy — but, nothing will change if we sit on the sidelines. Sign now if you agree that we deserve to know: Is the former president breaking the law?
